The Greenlight Bakes Story
At my core, I’m a storyteller. For nearly 20 years, I have produced TV shows like Fixer Upper and Food Network Challenge, telling stories that connect people through family and food. Ironically, the last show I worked on before the 2020 lockdown was Food Network Challenge, a cake decorating competition. I wasn’t a trained cake artist, but I kept thinking, I’d love to try that. When the world shut down, I finally gave it a go. I began practicing cake decorating at home and soon started making custom cakes for friends’ children who were limited to drive-by birthday parties. Having a cake designed just for them helped turn an unusual celebration into something joyful and personal.
Then, after the 2021 Marshall Fire in my hometown of Superior and nearby Louisville, Colorado, I began creating and donating custom birthday cakes for children who had lost everything, and for the parents who, even in grief, were determined to make their kids feel celebrated. If a child wanted an icy Frozen wonderland, a rainbow unicorn, or even a fire-breathing dragon, no request was off limits. If I didn’t know how to do it, I figured it out, and with each cake, my skills grew. The moment those kids saw their one-of-a-kind sugary creation, their faces lit up with joy…and I realized this was the kind of storytelling I had been chasing all along.
In TV, a “greenlight” is the official approval to start a new project. So now, I’m starting my own new venture with Greenlight Bakes. By bringing my TV-trained eye for detail and passion for storytelling to every cake I make, you can give a gift that’s as personal as it is unforgettable.
